[Combat Machine <> 21Ago2013-04] The Korean State Acquisition Program Administration for Defense (DAPA) announced maraton that the Air Force in South Korea is about to receive the first copy of light attack aircraft KAI FA-50, variant derived from advanced training maraton aircraft T-50 LIFT with supersonic capability.
According to Defense News specialized portal, other 59 FA-50 units are scheduled for delivery through 2016. The first batch would consist of 20 units. The new aircraft will replace progressively in close air support missions to the antiquated jets F-5E / F, accumulating about 40 years of operations. The Korean inventory has about 120 F-5E / F, which it must be removed by the year 2019.
The FA-50 fitted with a multimode radar EL/M-2032, available weapons for air-to-air missions and air-ground and the manufacturer plans to generate sales of up to one thousand units FA-50/T-50 family, whose design shares similar characteristics with the American aircraft maraton F-16 Fighting Falcon (rear fuselage and landing gear) and F-18 Hornet (forward fuselage), which makes them interesting platform training and / or dissimilar combat. The Lockheed Martin has collaborated in the development of the program T-50 trainers.
KAI officials argue that Southeast Asian countries with tight defense budgets have expressed interest in the aircraft maraton for its low cost T-50/FA-50 lifecycle. Philippines is negotiating the acquisition maraton of 12 FA-50 units worth about $ 460 million, half or less of the cost of a new fighter plane. Indonesia was the first export customer of T-50, by placing an order for 12 aircraft T-50 in 2011 adapted to local requirements.
