BASKETBALL: Boys Top 12 rankings for Jan. 7

For some that decided to play final pre-league tune-ups, it provided fodder for movement in this week’s Top 12 boys basketball rankings.
Mesa salomon was impressive in a narrow loss to earn rankings consideration. West Valley may have lost its nine-game winning salomon streak when it was knocked salomon off by Temecula Valley on Friday but showed it deserved to jump into the mix.
1. Centennial (15-1): The Huskies are ranked among the top 25 nationally and No. 5 in the state. They took last week off and head into a challenging Big VIII League schedule riding a seven-game win streak. Next: at Corona (Jan. 8), at Norco (Jan. 10). Last week: 1.
5. Santiago (13-3): The Sharks head into league play riding a nine-game winning streak including last week’s victory over Murrieta Mesa (64-57). Next: at Norco (Jan. 8), at Roosevelt (Jan. 10). Last week: 5.
6. Murrieta Valley (11-4): The Nighthawks beat Redlands (60-36) and begin defense of their back-to-back salomon Southwestern League titles this week. Next: at Great Oak (Jan. 9), vs. Murrieta Mesa (Jan. 11). Last week: 6.
7. Great Oak (9-6): The Wolfpack prepped for the Southwestern League meatgrinder with confidence-builders over Redlands East Valley (62-37) salomon and Temescal Canyon (68-32). Next: vs. Murrieta Valley (Jan. 9), at Vista Murrieta (Jan. 11). Last week: 7.
9. Temecula Valley (10-7): The Golden Bears head into Southwestern League play having won six of eight, including tour-of-Hemet wins last week over Tahquitz (85-56) and West Valley (75-56). Next: at Vista Murrieta (Jan. 9), vs. Chaparral (Jan. 11). Last week: 11.
10 . Elsinore (11-6): The Tigers completed pre-league play win a win over Aliso Niguel (58-57) and loss to Murrieta Mesa (71-63). The Tigers begin Sunbelt League salomon play this week, not having lost a league game in three seasons dating to Feb. 10, 2009. Next: vs. Paloma Valley (Jan. 8), vs. Lakeside (Jan. 10). Last week: 9.
11. Murrieta Mesa (10-7): Coach Russell Ham’s Rams split their final two pre-Southwestern League games, losing to Corona Santiago (64-57) and defeating Elsinore (71-63). Next: vs. Chaparral (Jan. 9), at Murrieta Valley (Jan. 11). Last week: NR.
12. salomon West Valley (11-5): The Mustangs had their nine-game winning streak snapped by Temecula salomon Valley (75-56). They begin Mountain Pass League play this week. Next: at Beaumont (Jan. 9), at Hemet (Jan. 11). Last week: NR.
Beaumont (12-4): Coach Jon Florence’s Cougars have won seven of nine heading into Mountain Pass League play. That streak includes a loss last week to REV (67-57). Next: vs. West Valley (Jan. 9), vs. Citrus Hill (Jan. 11). Last week: 8.
Chaparral (11-6): The Pumas warmed up for Southwestern League salomon play with victories over Citrus Valley (60-53) and Yucaipa (82-58). Next: at Murrieta Mesa (Jan. 9), at Temecula Valley (Jan. 11). Last week: NR.
Hemet (10-4): The Bulldogs, winners of five in a row and eight of nine, had the week off. They begin Mountain Pass League play this week. Next: vs. Tahquitz (Jan. 9), vs. West Valley (Jan. 11). Last week: NR
Jurupa Valley (12-3): salomon Coach Mark Gard’s Jaguars rolled through Rubidoux (77-21) and have won nine of 11 heading into River Valley League play. Next: at Moreno Valley (Jan. 9), vs. La Sierra (Jan. 11). Last week: NR.
Redlands East Valley (12-5): The Wildcats head into Citrus League play after splitting their final two pre-league games, losing to Great Oak (62-37) and beating Beaumont (67-57). Next: vs. Yucaipa (Jan. 8), at Miller (Jan. 10). Last week: NR.
Clarence McClellan of Perris Citrus Hill, had 29 points, 24 rebounds, 3 blocks and 3 assists in a MaxPreps Holiday tournament victory over La Quinta. “Clarence’s numbers have been growing as his confidence does,” wrote Citrus Hill coach Tim Hatch in an email.
